Brian has been a member of ISTJA for over thirty years. He contributed on science and technology to Technology Ireland, New Scientist, Sunday Tribune, Sunday Business Post, RTÉ Radio1 programmes, Irish Farmers’ Monthly, and was news editor, Sunday Tribune, and editor, Magill.

Dublin City University lecturer from 1992, founded and chaired Masters in Science Communication from 1996, retired 2010. Has given workshops and talks on science journalism, science communication and related topics in over twenty countries.

Co-author with M. Bucchi of Science Communication – the basics (Routledge, 2025); co-editor with M. Bucchi of Routledge Handbook of Public Communication of Science and Technology (2008, 2014 & 2021), and of Public Communication of Science, an anthology in four volumes (2016). Also co-editor with P. Murphy and D. Fahy of Little Country, Big Talk – science communication in Ireland (2017).

Member of the scientific committee, international PCST (Public Communication of Science and Technology) network for twenty years; president, 2014-21. Committee member, Mary Mulvihill Association. Convenor, Wexford Science Café.
