Maria is an investigative journalist for Noteworthy, a project by Journal Media, publishers of Ireland’s leading online news source TheJournal.ie. She is an award-winning science and health journalist. Previously, her writing has appeared in The Sunday Times, The Irish Times, The Sunday Business Post, Guardian.co.uk, Ars Technica, Creative Nonfiction, and more.
She has radio production and reporting experience with national stations including RTÉ Radio 1 and Newstalk.
Shortlisted for the prestigious Mary Raftery Prize for her investigative journalism in 2020. Winner of the Association of British Science Writers’ (ABSW) Newcomer Award, Britain & Ireland, 2015. Maria is a passionate science communicator, and was co-curator of the best-selling book A Neutron Walks into a Bar.
Graduating from the Smurfit Institute of Genetics, Trinity College Dublin, she then worked for Abbott Laboratories for a number of years. Following the success of her science blog, ScienceCalling.com, she made the move into journalism when she was awarded a scholarship to complete an MA in Journalism in Dublin City University.
