Maria is an award-winning investigative reporter for Noteworthy, a crowdfunded investigative journalism platform by Journal Media, publishers of Ireland’s leading online news source TheJournal.ie.
Previously, her writing has appeared in The Sunday Times, The Irish Times, The Sunday Business Post, Guardian.co.uk, Ars Technica, Creative Nonfiction, and more. She has radio production and reporting experience with national stations including RTÉ Radio 1 and Newstalk.
Recently won the Journalism Excellence Award in the Irish Red Cross Humanitarian Awards 2021 and the Research Policy / Funding Story of the Year 2021 by the Association of British Science Writers (ABSW). Previously, won the ABSW Newcomer Award, Britain & Ireland, 2015. Shortlisted for the prestigious Mary Raftery Prize 2019. Maria is a passionate science communicator, and was co-curator of the best-selling book A Neutron Walks into a Bar.
Graduating from the Smurfit Institute of Genetics, Trinity College Dublin, she then worked for Abbott Laboratories for a number of years. Following the success of her science blog, ScienceCalling.com, she made the move into journalism when she was awarded a scholarship to complete an MA in Journalism in Dublin City University.
